David Haye slays Valuev Goliath

Boxing | Sunday 8 November 2009 by Richard Blayney

It wasn’t a big shock to read this morning that David Haye is Britain’s latest heavyweight world champion following his points decision over the man monster that is Valuev. Giving up a foot in height and 100lbs in weight you might have expected a mauling, but Haye fought smart and took the victory. Valuev clearly intimidating by his height came up against someone who would take the fight to him and he couldn’t react. Actually, from what you read the only surprise was that the judges scored it as close as they did.

Haye will be a household name in boxing circles after this one and no doubt he will look to go on and unify the division like Lennox Lewis before him. It would be good to see and maybe breath some life into one of the worst divisions in boxing. The Heavy Weight championship of the world used to be one of the greatest prizes in sport, an honor that came with it the belief that the champion was one of the great athletes in the World. But in recent years the divisions has become a Heavy Weight division to the point that the heaviest men were winning the titles. The weight advantage went up and up and the fights soon became a duel not to get punched because if you did get punched by someone that size the fight was over. It turned the fans away and it breathed life into the lower weight categories. So with Haye winning, a big man but not enormous, maybe this will lift the profile of the division just a little. Especially if someone of a similar size can come forward to challenge him over the next few years.
