Toronto FC’s season may be over for me but the MLS season is still running with the MLS cup down to its final four teams as of this past weekend. David Beckham and his La Galaxy are still in the hunt and take on Houston Dynamo in the Western Final while Real Salt Lake will play Chicago in the other final. The winners of course will meet in the MLS Cup Final. Should Beckham win it would certainly justify LA’s move to get him a few years ago as back then they were the worst team in the MLS. Beckham is taking it serious, he has just pulled out of the England Squad in order to play these big games.

The best team in the regular season overall was Columbus crew and they were expected to easily go past Salt Lake in their first round game since Salt Lake had gotten the final playoff spot, but 1-0 and 3-2 wins for Salt Lake put them through 4-2 on aggregate causing the biggest upset of the playoffs so far. Can they ride this form right to the final?

That is the flaw with this playoff system that isn’t seven game series’ like in Hockey or Baseball. If a team squeaks into the playoffs with a points total that only has them mid-table in the full standings they can hit form for a handful of games and end up in the final or even winning the thing. Much like a team might have a strong run of results in the F.A. Cup and make the final, it doesn’t make them the best team in English football. The league finds out the most consistent team and they rightfully get the championship. But it could also be argued that this isn’t the way it works in the Champions League either and so the team that wants to win it all has to be consistent through the league schedule and also through the knockout stages when the pressure gets ramped up.

It is an exciting time of the football season and gives the global football fan some serious trophy action when other parts of the world are just entering the real grind of their league seasons.
