Arrogant England

Football | Friday 13 November 2009 by Richard Blayney

Nobody outside of England will be surprised to see the English acting arrogant yet again in Football circles. Today the English even went as far as considering to boycott their game against Brazil because they were not getting the VIP treatment in Doha. Maybe when they win something this side of the Beatles breaking up will they get some respect as an international footballing nation. Remember, the status of the domestic league set-up has no baring on their reputation as a national team. They have come a long way under Capello but they have to remember that they haven’t won anything yet and with this kind of attitude not many people will be rooting for them to win anything anytime soon and that will include their beloved hopes of hosting the 2018 World Cup.

Another reminder … they are the secondary team in Doha this weekend … they are playing Brazil. If ever there was a team that could play the roll of footballing Diva nation then it is Brazil.

England are playing without what pretty much amounts to their first XI selection. It won’t sit well with the organizers in Doha who have paid big money to bring the big names across to the middle east but then when you schedule pointless friendlies in the middle of the club season then what really can you expect but for clubs to look for their star players to somehow conger up an injury for the weekend. Only David Beckham has pulled out for footballing reasons as his Los Angeles Galaxy take part in their vital Western Conference Final game tonight. Becks really had no choice in this one after what he has put the L.A. fans through so far. As for the rest of them, well as a Liverpool fan I’m glad some of them have pulled out, but I can see why the money men in Doha are re-considering where their 2018 World Cup vote will go.
