January The Euro becomes an international currency. Argentina gets its fifth president in a fortnight. President Bush declares the “Axis of Evil” in his state of the Union address. Guantanamo Bay opens. Thomas Johansson wins the Australian Open Tennis.

February Queen Elizabeth celebrates 50 years on the throne. New England Patriots and quarterback Tom Brady cause a shock and beat St. Louis Rams in the Super Bowl XXXVI by 20-17. The Winter Olympics open in Salt Lake City – Team Canada win the mens Gold in Hockey beating the USA 5-2, while the games are marred by a judging scandal in the figure skating Tony Stewart wins the Daytona 500.

March Ariel Sharon declares Yassir Arafat as the “enemy of the entire free world.” Denzel Washington and Halle Berry win the Oscars. Gerrard Houllier returns to Liverpool after a six month absence. Liverpool end the month on top of the Premier League.

April Tiger Woods wins his third Masters. Bindaree wins the Grand National. Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes is killed in a car crash. Michael Jordan and his Washington Wizards fail to make the NBA playoffs. France complete the Grand Slam and win the Rugby Union Six Nations championship. Peter Ebdon beats Steven Hendry to win the World Snooker Championship.

May The White House admits it was warned in August ‘01 that Osama bin Laden was planning attacks on America. War Emblem wins the Kentucky Derby. Arsenal win the Premier League – Liverpool finish second ahead of Man Utd. Ipswich, Derby and Leicester are relegated. “The X-Files” goes off the air. Spider-Man opens. Real Madrid beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 in the Champions League Final for their 9th European Cup win. Helio Castroneves wins the Indy 500. In his North West 200 debut, Bruce Anstey wins the Production race. The World Cup begins in Japan/Korea with holders France suffering a shock defeat to Senegal.

June Brazil wins the World Cup beating Germany 2-0. Albert Costa wins the French Open Tennis. LA Lakers sweep the New Jersey Nets wo win their third straight NBA title. Lennox Lewis knocks out Mike Tyson. Hamid Karzai is elected president of Afghanistan. Serena beats Venus to win the woman’s French Open. Detroit Red Wings under the great Scotty Bowman beat Carolina Hurricanes four games to one to win the Stanley Cup. Scotty Bowman then retires. Tiger Woods wins the US Open and is the only golfer under par for the tournament. Jose Theodore wins the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s Most Valuable Player.

July Lance Armstrong wins his forth consecutive Tour de France. Ernie Els wins the British Open. The MLB All-Star Game ends in a draw. Lleyton Hewitt wins Wimbledon. Manchester United sign Rio Ferdinand for £29 million.

August CNN pays $34,000 for Al Qaeda training footage. Rich Beem beats Tiger Woods by one shot to win the PGA Championship.

September Pete Sampras defeats Andre Agassi in the U.S. Open finals, his final Grand Slam win. Kelly Clarkson wins “American Idol”. Mario Cipollini wins the World Cycling Championship.

October Tim Montgomery breaks the 100-meter world record with a time of 9.78 seconds. Snipers cause chaos in Washington DC shooting numerous people. Wayne Rooney scores his first Premier League goal. The Anaheim Angels beat the San Francisco Giants in game seven of the World Series. President Bush explains to American’s why he must invade Iraq.

November The Montreal Alouettes win the 90th Grey Cup game, defeating the Edmonton Eskimos 25-16.

December The year ends with Arsenal leading the Premier League ahead of Chelsea, Man Utd, Everton and Liverpool.
