Superbowl Preview: Arizona Cardinals v Pittsburgh Steelers
American Football | Saturday 31 January 2009 by Richard BlayneyI have admitted many times that I do not know a great deal about American football and to be fair have never gone full out to try and learn but this is a sports blog and this is one of the biggest single sporting events in the sporting year and certainly worth a mention.
I don’t think, baring maybe one or two Superbowl’s, that I have ever watched an American Football game from start to finish and even in those Superbowls that I did, I was on my laptop at the same time. When I was back in the UK I subscribed to the North American Sports Network (NASN) and from time to time tried to sit down and watch College Football but with all the stoppages and commercial breaks my attention easily moved elsewhere. The problem with the NFL for me was that it was always on after midnight and when I found it hard enough to concentrate during daylight hours it was almost impossible after dark.
This weekend though I will at long last be in the correct time zone. I’ve been in the correct time zone all season in fact but still have found it hard to overcome the commercial breaks and stoppages. When I told an NFL fan this they told me to expect it doubly as bad for the Superbowl. With a 30 second commercial break costing companies $3-million then you can see why there are more advert breaks than plays.
If anything though I’ll at least get to see the legend that is Bruce Springsteen play at the half-time show. That is one sight to behold, how they transform the field into a concert stadium with fans even on the field of play to watch the artist.
Maybe I’ll head to a local pub. Apparently they all throw Superbowl parties and are jammed pack. The atmosphere might be good and watching the game with knowledgeable, drunk and rowdy fans is always better than watching it on my own wondering what is going on.
I’ll have more to write on the game over the weekend.
