England bid for World Cup glory in Spain while Beckham hopes to break a milestone record

Football | Wednesday 11 February 2009 by Richard Blayney

England play Spain this evening in a game that should they get a result in, will absolutely confirm England as the team to beat in World Cup 2010. No doubt about it and the parade route for the victory in that World Cup will be planned up and printed on the back page of every Sports paper across England. In fact, a victory against the best team in the World tonight and they may as well save everyone the money in these tough financial times and just cancel the whole show in South Africa next year, hand England the trophy and be done with it.

The reality to everyone else is that it is a friendly game with nothing on the line and that the result is irrelevant when compared to being entertained by some good football. It may be a friendly but at least it is two top end teams and not England playing San Marino.

Of course there is a final reason to mention this game and that is David Beckham. Tonight, should his boots touch the hallowed turf of whatever turf they are playing on in sunny Spain, then he will become England’s most capped outfield player of all time, equalling the record of Bobby Moore.

It has stirred up some debates on the radio today about whether he deserves this honor for playing so many games, but the fact is, he has played that many games and I personally feel he has deserved to be involved in every one of them.

Beckham is a classy guy and a good player. His move from the MLS to Milan might yet get messy but you can’t blame a player for wanting to further his career in the big time and if he is going to them lengths just to stay involved in the England set up then commitment like that should never be overlooked.

As for the game itself, well England will be without Steven Gerrard which suits me just fine but unfortunately the fragile Fernando Torres will be in the line up.
