The Galaxy call the Beckham offer an ‘Insult’
Hockey | Sunday 22 February 2009 by Richard BlayneyHave you ever been drunk in a pub and missed the last call and then went to the bar looking a final pint before hitting the road only to be told the bar was closed? Your mind recoils in horror as you scream at the bar man while eyeing the doormen out of the corner of your eye, waiting for them thugs in leather coats to grab you and toss you into the gutter like the drunk you are not. The barman doesn’t shift and refuses to open the bar up for your convenience and it disturbs you greatly. You scream gibberish in his face as he grows more disturbed, either with fear that you might have the potential to jump over the bar and use his eye lids to open a round of bottles for you and your friends or more than likely disturbed by your state. To get rid of you he can either call for the doormen to eject you from the bar by your head via the fire exit door or offer you a glass of water as an alternative.
The glass of water is the ultimate insult for what you really wanted and you choose to go out the door by your head! At about this time you realise how exactly the Los Angeles Galaxy are feeling when, in hoping for upward of $10-15-million dollars for David Beckham, they are offered $3-million by Milan.
Now lets lay the facts on the line:
1. David Beckham is a legend of a player in my eyes. Some people hate him and many like him. I like him. The way the guy carries himself on and off the field is something all kids growing up in the game should be exposed to. He has had a great career and clearly still has something to offer.
2. He is a dinosaur.
No point beating around the bush on this one. As much as I like him, Daivd Beckham in football terms is going on 84-years of age. His best day are clearly behind and while he is still good enough to crack the England team, so to is Bobby Charlton should he wish to make a comeback. Seriously though, Beckham at his current age is never going to generate the big bucks he might have at 25. He still has his right foot and his crossing ability and in some peoples eyes that is all he ever had, but the fact remains that once you cross the 30 threshold, you are no longer a double digit million dollar man.
The Galaxy won’t accept that, yet that too is understandable considering what Beckham brings in through endorsements and ticket sales in the MLS. In any other league a $3-million offer would have any team accepting, but for the Galaxy an 84-year old player who still has the looks, still draws the woman and still sells the shirts is invaluable and therefore worth trying to hang onto.
This though is likely to end in tears one way or another.
On that note I am off to bed safe in the knowledge I wasn’t ejected from the bar via my head and got my pint in before last call.
