Martin Brodeur makes history in all-time wins for a goalie
Hockey | Wednesday 18 March 2009 by Richard BlayneyLast night Marty Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils became the first goalie in the history of the game to win 552 games. He surpassed Patrick Roy’s record with the win against Chicago and upped his status in the debate of who was/is the best goaltender in the history of hockey.
Personally I believe he is as good as anyone. He has the stats, he has the records and he has the highlight reel saves to back it up. Patrick Roy is many peoples choice as the best but by the time Brodeur retires I don’t think there will be much of an argument.
Remember, Brodeur is only 36-years of age and as a goalie that means he has a good three to four years left in the NHL. While his game my start to dip in two to three years there is no doubt there will be a job for him somewhere and he will keep picking up the wins. That is if he decides to continue playing past the age of say 38 and doesn’t retire at the top of his game.
Right now his game is as good as it has ever been, his New Jersey team are one of the best in the East, he has three years left on his contract and so that all points towards many more wins, potentially more cups and therefore standards and numbers that might well be unbreakable.
Brodeur has the chance to set the goal tending all-time win number so far out of reach that it would be similar to Gretzky’s all-time points number.
