Unless it is World Cup year then you might claim June, but in general April is always the month I look forward to most on the sporting calendar. All my favorite sports are in full swing, there is lots to watch, write and talk about. Here is a run down of just some of the things you can enjoy as a sports fan in April.

In Football I will be engrossed in the run-in to the Premier League title race, the Champions League knockout stages and the semi-finals of the F.A. Cup. It doesn’t get much busier than that and only May might be bigger in this sport when the finals of all these competitions are held.

Then there is Hockey and in April, Hockey means Playoff Hockey. The NHL regular season has come to an end and the Playoffs are about to begin. In minor leagues they have already begun or even been completed. The British Elite League final-four weekend is at the start of April while the Canadian Junior Hockey playoffs are already in full-swing. I had been going to the St. Michael’s majors first round games but a busy schedule meant I missed their second round series against local rivals Brampton and they ended up losing it. So while the CHL playoffs continue, they do so without Mississauga. But just when you thought there couldn’t be more hockey the AHL playoffs are set to begin this week also and the Toronto Marlies will be involved. I hope to get down to one of their games next weekend so my attending of hockey games for the season might not be done just yet.

Next is the F1 season, up and running and looking to be as exciting as ever. The Cycling season is underway also with some big classics on through April as well as my own cycling season getting going! Baseball is back which I have been making the most of having gone to the Blue Jays home opener and watched the rest of their games on the TV as they get off to a credable 5-2 start. Golf’s first major has just ended at Agusta, the Grand National took place two weekends ago and the NBA playoffs are just around the corner.

Now you get an idea as to why April is such a good month for the sporting fan. Today is 13 April so we’re not even halfway through the money so whatever your sport is I hope your enjoying it.
