British Grand Prix at risk

F1 2009 | Friday 24 April 2009 by Richard Blayney

The future of the British grand prix was hanging in the balance last night after it emerged that the company holding the contract to stage the race at Donington Park from 2010 is being sued for almost £2.5m in outstanding rent.

Even more seriously, the circuit owners, Wheatcroft and Son, a building developer ñ are seeking as part of the legal action started at Derby County Court yesterday to cancel the 150-year lease they granted to the track operators, Donington Ventures Leisure Ltd.

Remind me again why the Canadian Grand Prix was taken away?

I will say as much that the British Grand Prix is a staple part of the F1 diet in the same way the Canadian GP is. I would hate to see it lost to use all as well and wouldn’t be overly comfortable about seeing the Canadian GP come back in place of somewhere like Britain, though I would accept it for my own greed.

Bernie Eccelstone continues to screw around with the sport to the point that in ten years I wonder if there will be anything more than the Monaco GP in Europe with everything else in the far east leaving me with no solution but to zombie it up every other Sunday to get my live F1 fix.

It sounds unrealistic but then, ten years ago would you have taken the idea of the Canadian and French GP’s being gone and the British soon to follow?

I’ll leave you with the words spoken by our dear friend Bernie Eccelstone to the written press yesterday:

“I don’t worry about anything to be honest with you,”

And that my friends is the problem.
