Clutching at straws to find a way that United might blow it

Football | Monday 11 May 2009 by Richard Blayney

Word today coming out of the Premier League is that all may no longer be well in the United dressing room. As a Liverpool fan that is just the straw I was looking for to clutch too with all my might in the belief that this might just shake United enough to see them lose two games and blow their title charge. United are odds on and for good reason. They have a game in hand and have to do little more than show up for their final games. The pressure will be there in the back of their mind but in an ideal world Liverpool would still have ten more games to still try and win this dam league which seems to be just out of reach.

The internet was full of reports than Ronaldo threw his toys out of the pram upon being substituted yesterday while Tevez gave some kind of protest celebration about being denied a perminant move to the club. His days are likely numbered and no doubt we’re in for another summer of speculation on Ronaldo.

Likely this will not shake United but one can but hope.

Down at the other end of the table things are tighter still. Newcastle had a huge win against Middlesbrough sending them closer to the drop. The win moved Newcastle out of the relegation zone but far from into safety. This will no doubt go to the final day of the season but a lot of neutrals will be rooting for Newcastle — it wouldn’t be the same to see them out of the league though it was only twenty years or so ago that they were in the lower leagues and it was Kevin Keegan who was trying to bring them back to the big-time.

League Table:

               GP W D L +/- PTS
1. Man Utd 35 26 5 4 +42 83
2. Liverpool 36 23 11 2 +46 80
3. Chelsea 36 23 8 5 +41 77
4. Arsenal 36 19 11 6 +28 68
5. Aston Villa 36 16 10 10 +5 58
6. Everton 36 15 12 9 +14 57
-----------------------------------------
18. Newcastle 36 7 13 16 -17 34
17. Hull 36 8 10 18 -24 34
19. Mid'bro 36 7 10 19 -28 31
