Conference Semi Final Predictions

Tales from the 2009 Playoffs | Thursday 30 April 2009 by Richard Blayney

So one round down and I managed to go 4/8 for 50% in the first round. I did say it was 50/50 when it came to predicting in the playoffs, regardless of ranking. The second round should be more accurate now that we’ve had a chance to see how each team got on in the first round. Anyway enough about the chit-chat, let’s get down to it. . . . Read More»

Where have you gone failing dope tests? Sports bloggers turn their lonely eyes to you (Woo Woo Woo)

Summer Olympics | Wednesday 29 April 2009 by Richard Blayney

Like a drug addict long overdue his next hit I was beginning to grow nervous of everything around me, becomingparanoid, unsure of what was going on and why the evil and very much writable side of sporting culture was letting me down? It had been so long and I was due a fix of athletes failing the good old drug test.

It is normally a monthly event in one sporting arena or another from Cycling to Baseball to Athletics, but it had already been a couple of months since Alex Rodriguez came ‘clean’ for what of a better word, and the Tour de France was still a good two months away.

Then came news yesterday that six Olympic athletes from last years games in Beijing had tested positive for performance enhancing drugs. Normal order was restored and I could sleep knowing that all was right again with the sporting world and its evil under belly.

Now that was dramatic

Tales from the 2009 Playoffs | Wednesday 29 April 2009 by Richard Blayney

What a way to close the first round of playoff games. Last night was gripping hockey at its very best. Two Eastern Conference match-ups went into game seven and while neither required overtime they both went right down to the wire. The New York Rangers managed to keep Alex Ovechkin quiet but it was the veteran Sergei Federov who rolled back the years with a great goal in the third period to win the series.

In all the other six games one team would play exceptionally well the other quite poor, but last night both were on their game and after a slow first period from Washington but teams traded efforts as both goalies stood on their heads to keep their teams in the game.

Chekski hold of Barca on the road

Football | Wednesday 29 April 2009 by Richard Blayney

0-0 after the first leg. Not a bad start to their Champions League Semi-Final for the Blues. Barca meanwhile will not be too upset either knowing that just one goal at the Bridge will mean the valuable away goal that Chelsea didn’t manage to grab last night. Braca though have been doing a lot of crying since the game ended about Chelsea’s negative tactics, seemingly forgetting that it is not against the rules of the game to be defensive and cautious. Not everyone can play the Liverpool in April style of football!

Hamilton gets luck and escapes 3 race ban

F1 2009 | Wednesday 29 April 2009 by Richard Blayney

Lewis Hamilton will be thanking his lucky stars tonight after finding out that a potential 3 race ban was suspended pending good behaviour in future races. It follows the teams misleading of officials at the Australian Grand Prix. It seems though the team were open and honest about the goings on at their hearing and Formula One has taken that into account before throwing down a suspension.

Needless to say they also took in to account the potential lost revenue for the sport for if McLaren, Hamilton etc. were not available for the next three races. That would not have sat well with the BBC and the British public either having their Golden boy missing for the next three European races — just in time for racing at a sensible hour of the day.

Conference Quarters coming to an end . . .

Tales from the 2009 Playoffs | Tuesday 28 April 2009 by Richard Blayney

So the Stanley Cup playoffs have been pressing along at an incredible rate since I last wrote and there has been a lot to talk about. We’ve had more teams eliminated and the shape of the Conference Semi-Final match-ups are now taking shape.

What about them Blue Jays?

2009 Toronto Blue Jays | Sunday 26 April 2009 by Richard Blayney

This is just great stuff. The Toronto Blue Jays are turning heads, upsetting the form book and giving us some brilliant baseball to watch as they are off to their best start to a season since 1992 when they went on to win the World Series. The Jays who are now 14-6 on the season picked up a win against Chicago White Sox today with legend Roy Halladay on the mound. The team remain in first place in their uber tough division that includes the Yankees and Red Sox. At the time of writing their 14 wins on the season is the most in the Major Leagues.

The Red Sox are hot on their tales however with a 11-6 record and a 9 game winning streak. They play the Yankees tonight so I know who I will be cheering for.
