It was twenty years ago today: The English League Division One
It was twenty years ago today... | Wednesday 18 January 2012 by Richard BlayneyThe following is a new series that looks back at the standings and results from various sporting events twenty years ago to the day. First up a look at the English 1st Division results and table from January 18, 1992 — the final season before the Premier League era would begin.
Back in these days the English top flight was made up of 22 teams and nearly all the games were played at 3 p.m. on a Saturday. There was less television coverage as well and to see the majority of the days goals — what with no Internet coverage and Sky Sports in its very infancy — you had to wait until later that night and tune into Match of the Day on the BBC. It was the final season of Division 1 football (and of Gary Linekar) before the Premier League juggernaut would take over and Sky Sports would reset the football history clock back to zero. Yes, if you’re under the age of about 25, there was indeed football prior to the beginning of the 1992/93 season and better still, Leeds United were a force to be reckoned with.
