2010 Toronto Blue Jays | Sunday 22 August 2010 by Richard Blayney
It’s refreshing to look at Toronto media websites and see praise for the current crop of Toronto Blue Jays. Given that they are not heading to the playoffs it is unusual for the local media to be in such high spirits but given the youth within the Blue Jays team, given the entertaining of ball they play and given the hope for the future with talent in the system, there is many reasons to be positive. This article by Richard Griffin for the Toronto Star looks at why there is so much promise around this years Jay’s team.

2010 Toronto Blue Jays | Monday 9 August 2010 by Richard Blayney

I hadn’t been along to a Jays game in exactly two months but decided that for my shame of having previously ranted on about people not going along more often and leaving the stadium half empty, I had better get back and catch up. So I picked out Friday and Sunday to go along to the park to watch two of the three game series against Tampa Bay Rays, one of the best teams in the American League. I had no big expectations though the Jays had been on a good run of form so I was banking on at least one win and preferably two wins from three in the series. As it turns out, the Jays swept the series, and not only did they pick up three fine wins, but they put on three outstanding performances leaving us with what will almost surely be the two biggest stories of the Jays 2010 season.

You might have been forgiven for never having heard of J.P. Arencibia before today, but regardless of what kind of Baseball fan you are, if you are in anyway inclinded to the Toronto Blue Jays you will know of him tonight and probably won’t forget him either. Arencibia, at 24 years of age, was playing in his first major league game; In the first ball of his first at-bat he launched the ball for a home run. Pretty impressive start to your career, right? Well, he wasn’t done there. He followed it up with a double, a single and yet another home run. It was an unbelievable start and the crowd absolutely loved it. He got a standing ovation from the 24,168 in attendance as the Blue Jays destroyed the Tampa Bay Rays 17-11 in a slug-fest.

Baseball | Wednesday 4 August 2010 by Richard Blayney

I was about to write a bit about the good form of the Toronto Blue Jays of late off the back of their two wins in the past two days against the New York Yankees only to check online for a score update on their afternoon set against the same team and find out that Alex Rodriguez used the game to blast his 600th career home run becoming just the 7th player ever to hit the milestone. Given that he hit about 500 of them with a needle in his arm kind of waters down the achievement and certainly adds to the controversy as fans begin the debate about whether praise should be heaped upon him or whether an astrix should go beside his name along with the rest that batted through the steroids era, but either way his feat will go into the record books.

2010 Toronto Blue Jays | Wednesday 21 July 2010 by Richard Blayney
It’s been over a month since I last got down to see the Jays and after planning to hit about 15 games this season I have only gotten along to four so far. But with a handful of home games coming up next week after the end of a long road trip, I hope to get along to a few more before we head into August. The Jays for July have been about average going by their record of 8-7 but of late the boys looked to have hit a bit of form and unlike last season when their season completely collapsed in mid-summer, this team looks like they could yet wind up as an above .500 team.

At the end of May this year with the Blue Jays record sitting at 31-22 many people were saying that what was supposed to be a rebuilding year was turning into one of the best starts to a Blue Jays season for a long time. Of course, nobody expected it to last and now just a month later with a record of 40-38 the good start may be coming to and end, but am I alone in thinking the way things have gone this year have a striking resemblance to the 2009 season?

Never before have I heard a reception from the home fans to a team getting beat 9-0 but last night the stadium was loud, it was packed and everyone was on their feet clapping as the home team Toronto Blue Jays lost 9-0 to the Philadelphia Phillies. The reason for this was that the Jays home game was being playing in the Phillies stadium in Philadelphia. Confusing I know but if you follow the Jays, Baseball or the G20 you probably know by now that because of the global political summit the Blue Jays were forced to move their home series against Philaelphia to Philadelphia for security reasons – the Jays stadium, the Rogers Centre – was located right next to the security zone were the G20 is taking place. The game was played under American League rules, the Blue Jays batted second but the other factor – the fans – were truly on the side of the Phillies. Not that it was the fans that made the big difference, that was the man that used to play for the Blue Jays – their greatest ever player – whom they traded to Philadelphia last season … Roy Halladay.
