Boxing nonsense

Boxing | Wednesday 6 January 2010 by Richard Blayney

I am the only one skeptical about this whole Floyd Mayweather Jr v Manny Pacquiao fiasco about whether one should have to take a drugs test and whether one will take the other to court etc. etc. etc.? Surely I am not alone in thinking this is all nonsense to build the fight up more and more therefore, more importantly in modern day boxing – build up the purse for both men.

Just get on with it.

Pacquiao stops Cotto

Boxing | Sunday 15 November 2009 by Richard Blayney

What an excellent fight that was and well worth the $10 I had to pay at the door of the pub to get in and see it. It would have been $55 to sit at home and watch it and while there was more than 5.5 people in the bar last night I still didn’t mind paying the big fee to see it on the big screen, or as it turned out the little private screen by our seats. Hoops Sports Bar and Grill has as many TV’s than any other bar I have been to so it is ideal for big time sporting events such as this one. The bar was jammed packed with mainly Philippino fans in there to watch their national hero Pacquiao do the business.

David Haye slays Valuev Goliath

Boxing | Sunday 8 November 2009 by Richard Blayney

It wasn’t a big shock to read this morning that David Haye is Britain’s latest heavyweight world champion following his points decision over the man monster that is Valuev. Giving up a foot in height and 100lbs in weight you might have expected a mauling, but Haye fought smart and took the victory. Valuev clearly intimidating by his height came up against someone who would take the fight to him and he couldn’t react. Actually, from what you read the only surprise was that the judges scored it as close as they did.

Haye will be a household name in boxing circles after this one and no doubt he will look to go on and unify the division like Lennox Lewis before him. It would be good to see and maybe breath some life into one of the worst divisions in boxing. The Heavy Weight championship of the world used to be one of the greatest prizes in sport, an honor that came with it the belief that the champion was one of the great athletes in the World. But in recent years the divisions has become a Heavy Weight division to the point that the heaviest men were winning the titles. The weight advantage went up and up and the fights soon became a duel not to get punched because if you did get punched by someone that size the fight was over. It turned the fans away and it breathed life into the lower weight categories. So with Haye winning, a big man but not enormous, maybe this will lift the profile of the division just a little. Especially if someone of a similar size can come forward to challenge him over the next few years.

A mismatch for the ages

Boxing | Friday 6 November 2009 by Richard Blayney

This is the weigh in for the big title fight between Russian Nikolai Valuev and Britain’s David Haye. If the image does not remind you of Rocky IV when he took on the big Russian Captain Ivan Drago, then I don’t know what does. Haye while well built looks like a little boy next to this man monster who weights in at 22st 11lbs (319lbs) and stands at 7ft 2in. Considering Haye stands at 6ft 3in and weighs 15st 8lbs (218lbs) which is quite a bit bigger than myself, then it just shows how huge this Russian is.

Boxing’s greed wins the day again

Boxing | Thursday 22 January 2009 by Richard Blayney

The greed in boxing has once again came to the spotlight with news tonight that Ricky Hatton’s fight against Manny Pacquiao is off over money. Surprise surprise. The split of the purse was the arguing factor after both boxers had agreed on a 50/50 split only for Pacquiao to turn round and want 60/40. Whatever the figures and whoever is to blame doesn’t really matter. The only people losing out here are the fans — what is left of them — in the greediest sport on earth.
