The Guardian website has been running a series for a while now looking at the 50 most stunning Olympic moments. Today they put out their choice for 11th place which just so happened to be one of the most endearing stories in Olympic history: Eric Moussambani, better known as Eric the Eel.

The trials and tribulations of Tranmere Rovers

Everyone has one of those teams, separate from the one they support, that they ‘like to keep an eye on’ when the afternoons results are read out or the league tables flash up. I wrote just yesterday about how Nice have become that team for me in the French Leagues, but long before I even knew Nice existed, Tranmere Rovers, they of lower league English football, became a team ‘I like to keep an eye on’ after a visit to their home ground of Prenton Park in the early-mid 1990′s.

It was twenty years ago today: The English League Division One

The following is a new series that looks back at the standings and results from various sporting events twenty years ago to the day. First up a look at the English 1st Division results and table from January 18, 1992 — the final season before the Premier League era would begin.

Back in these days the English top flight was made up of 22 teams and nearly all the games were played at 3 p.m. on a Saturday. There was less television coverage as well and to see the majority of the days goals — what with no Internet coverage and Sky Sports in its very infancy — you had to wait until later that night and tune into Match of the Day on the BBC. It was the final season of Division 1 football (and of Gary Linekar) before the Premier League juggernaut would take over and Sky Sports would reset the football history clock back to zero. Yes, if you’re under the age of about 25, there was indeed football prior to the beginning of the 1992/93 season and better still, Leeds United were a force to be reckoned with.
