Sometimes you get miracles, sometimes you hit the post

Several years ago in a game between Canada and Russia in the World Junior Championships, the Canadian team won 6-5 having come from behind on a last ditch goal by current Edmonton Oilers star Jordan Eberle. It was regarded by many as the most dramatic moment in Canadian World Junior history. On Tuesday night, it was almost surpassed; but as TSN host James Duthie said after the game, “Sometimes you get miracles, sometimes you hit the post.”

The game was always expected to be close – you probably wouldn’t have got great odds on there being one goal between the two sides – but when Russia came out flying with two goals in the first, three in the second and another in the third, it was all but time to power down the television and call it a night. Nobody in their right mind foreseen such a thumping, but then again, nobody foreseen what almost came next.
